Leadership Under Real Conditions - Signature Paper

This signature paper introduces Leadership Under Real Conditions, a series examining how leaders exercise judgment when information is incomplete, responsibilities compete, and decisions affect other people’s lives. Drawing on nearly three decades of education and executive leadership, I argue that responsible leadership depends on more than individual character or resolve. Authority, trust, institutional support, and the way a leader’s identity is interpreted all shape what becomes possible in practice. The paper connects these conditions to accountability: leaders must test assumptions, listen to those affected, explain their choices, and remain open to correction. It also establishes a focused inquiry into the implications for Black men in leadership within a conversation intended for leaders across sectors. The paper sets out the premise of the series while leaving its specific questions and conclusions for the essays that follow.
